If your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) is due to expire on 31 December 2024 but your course extends beyond this expiration date, then this is because all BRPs are currently being issued with a validity until 31 December 2024. The UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) is transitioning from the BRP system to a digital immigration status for all visa holders. Starting from 1 January 2025, all visa holders will be able to demonstrate their immigration status online and a BRP will no longer be needed.

You don’t need to do anything if this applies to you as your immigration status will remain valid beyond 31 December 2024. UKVI have confirmed that in spring/summer 2024, they will reach out to students whose BRP does not cover the full length of their immigration permission with advice to register for an online account to be able to use their ‘View and prove service’.

Keep checking this page for further updates. Moreover, the latest information on what BRP holders need to do, and when, will be available at the UKVI website below:

In the meantime, if you applied for your student visa from overseas, your Visa decision letter should have your full visa duration. You can also use the Right to work check online service as this service is available to all student visa holders.

If you submitted your student visa application within the UK, you can check the full duration of your visa in the email that you received with the outcome of your visa application.
