How did you end up in clearing?
At first, I wasn’t intending to go to university. My plan was to find a job or possibly an apprenticeship. However, after receiving my A Level results, my family encouraged me to at least consider higher education, so I agreed to look into a few courses.
Surprisingly, I found myself genuinely interested in both Computer Science and Engineering, and the more I researched, the more I saw the added value of a university environment, not just in terms of learning, but also in building connections, gaining teamwork experience and having recognised qualifications.
Eventually, I chose the Computer Science with Games Programming course through Clearing, as it combined creativity, problem-solving, and a subject I already had a background in and passion for.
“Even my brief conversation with a staff member left a positive impression; they were helpful, clear and supportive during the Clearing process, which definitely played a role in my final decision to study at Huddersfield.”
Why did you choose to apply to the University of Huddersfield?
I wanted to avoid unnecessary expenses, so applying to a university within walking distance from my home made a lot of sense. More importantly, they offered the exact course I was interested in, and the overall environment seemed more student-focused than other options I looked into.
What really made Huddersfield stand out to me was its active student community and support networks. I was impressed by how the societies were run by students, for students, which gave me confidence that they were genuinely aligned with the needs and interests of people like me.
I also liked that the course I was applying to could potentially be completed through coursework and team projects alone, without traditional exams, which suited my learning style.

“The presence of inclusive student networks within the Students’ Union also showed that the university makes a real effort to ensure everyone feels welcome, regardless of background.”
What was your experience of applying through Clearing?
My experience of applying through Clearing was much more straightforward than I expected. I contacted the University the day after I received my A Level results. The call itself was quick and efficient. I was asked a few direct questions about the course I was interested in, whether I had arranged student finance, and also provided my A Level results to confirm my eligibility. I had already gathered all the necessary information, including my UCAS ID and course preferences, which helped keep the conversation focused.
The University then invited me to attend their Clearing Open Day, which gave me an opportunity to visit the campus, speak to staff in person, and gain a better understanding of the course structure and student support available.
Overall, the process was clear, well-organised, and reassuring; and what I had expected to be a stressful and uncertain experience turned out to be a smooth and informative first step towards starting university.
“My main advice to anyone applying through Clearing would be to prepare in advance and approach the process with an open mind.”
What advice would you give to anyone applying through Clearing?
Even if university wasn’t your original plan, Clearing can be a valuable opportunity to reassess your options and find a course that genuinely suits your interests and goals.
Start by researching the universities and courses you're interested in. Go beyond just the course title and look at the modules, the teaching style, the assessment methods, and what support is available. This not only helps you make a more informed decision but also puts you in a stronger position when speaking to university staff.

What's your advice for making a Clearing call?
When it comes to making the call, have everything ready: your UCAS ID, A Level results and a shortlist of courses you’re interested in. It helps to write down a few notes or questions beforehand, so you feel more confident during the conversation. Don’t be afraid to ask for clarification or additional information, the staff are there to help you, not to catch you out.
Finally, try to stay calm and remember that Clearing isn’t a last resort, it’s just another route into higher education. Many students find the right course and university through Clearing and making that decision with a clear head and a bit of preparation can make all the difference.
“Overall, the Clearing Open Day played a key role in confirming that Huddersfield was the right place for me.”
What was your experience of attending an Open Day at Huddersfield?
Attending the Clearing Open Day at the University of Huddersfield was a genuinely useful and reassuring experience. It’s one thing to read about a course or a university online, but being there in person allows you to ask meaningful questions, get honest answers, and make a more confident, informed decision.
Although I had already done quite a bit of research online, actually being on campus gave me a much clearer sense of what the university was like – not just in terms of facilities, but also the overall atmosphere.
During the day, I had the chance to speak directly with course tutors and ask questions about the course structure, the types of projects involved and how assessments were handled. I also explored key areas of the campus, including the computing labs and student spaces, which helped me get a better feel for the learning environment.
What’s your favourite thing about your course?
My favourite aspect of the Computer Science with Games Programming course is the balance between creativity and technical problem-solving. I enjoy how the course allows me to develop practical programming skills while also encouraging me to think imaginatively about game design and interactive experiences.
I also like the emphasis on teamwork and project-based learning. Collaborating with other students on real-world projects not only helps me to improve my coding abilities but also build communication and organisational skills. This hands-on approach makes the learning experience engaging and directly relevant to the kind of work I hope to pursue after graduation.

How do you find commuting to campus?
Commuting to campus has been a manageable and even positive part of my university experience. Walking to the University has allowed me to avoid the stress and cost of long journeys and have better balance between my studies and personal life.
I have still been able to engage fully with student life. I am an Academic Rep and a member of the Student Advisory Council. These roles have given me opportunities to contribute to the University community and influence positive changes. I've also attended several society events and regularly make use of the gym facilities on campus, both of which have helped me build connections with other students and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

“Commuting to campus has not hindered my participation in university life. In fact, it has encouraged me to be more intentional about the activities I join, ensuring I make the most of the opportunities available.”
Tell us about some of the extracurricular activities you have been involved with
As an Academic Rep, I have had the opportunity to represent my fellow students’ interests and feedback, working closely with faculty members to help improve the course experience. This role has strengthened my communication and leadership skills and allowed me to play a meaningful part in shaping university policies.
Also, I currently serve as the Outreach Officer for the British Sign Language (BSL) Society and as the President of the Academic Game Design Society. Both roles allow me to develop my leadership abilities while engaging with communities that align closely with my interests.
Beyond these leadership roles, I regularly attend events organised by the Students’ Union, which have allowed me to meet a diverse group of people, expand my social networks and develop new interests outside of my academic field.
“From the helpfulness of staff during Clearing to the welcoming atmosphere on campus during the Open Day, I felt encouraged and valued every step of the way.”
Are you glad that you chose the University of Huddersfield?
I’m very glad that I chose the University of Huddersfield. While I initially had reservations about university life, my experience so far has not only met but often surpassed my expectations.
The course’s focus on practical, project-based learning has proven to be exactly what I needed to stay engaged and motivated, so I know that my choice to study it was the right one.
What has impressed me most about the University is the supportive and inclusive environment that the University fosters.
