Why Sport, Exercise and Nutrition Sciences

If you’re interested in how an understanding of science can improve both sport performance and health, then this could be the subject area for you. Our Sport, Exercise and Nutrition Sciences courses bring together a diverse and fascinating range of subjects including anatomy, biomechanics, physiology, psychology, and nutrition. We also emphasise sport and physical education for children and young people to promote lifelong participation and healthier lifestyles.

You’ll get to know how the body responds and adapts to exercise, how nutritional intake can optimise sport performance and improve health, and how to promote positive behaviour change. We help you gain real-world experience so you can develop the skills employers are looking for. You’ll be able to use the fantastic range of facilities in our biomechanics and physiology labs and we’ll help to provide you with a work placement while you study, giving you the opportunity to build up industry contacts too.

Our courses

Accredited courses and Professional links

All our Sport, Exercise and Nutrition Sciences courses are endorsed by the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA), which enables you to meet industry recognised standards and gain qualifications within your degree which are recognised by major employers. Working closely in partnership with CIMSPA enables us to improve your employability and reflects our commitment to equipping you with the skills, knowledge and experience needed to effectively transition into roles in the sector.

You can also apply for student membership of CIMSPA. The cost of student membership is just £5 per student (83% saving), which will enable you to access e-learning, guest lectures, digital newsletters and magazines, and work placement, volunteering and job opportunities.

Some of our courses are also endorsed by The British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES), BUES (BASES Undergraduate Endorsement Scheme). The BASES accreditation ensures that the courses meet the very high standards required by the external body, resulting in a superior learning experience.

Our Sport and Exercise Nutrition courses are approved by the Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register (SENr), meaning that successful completion of this degree acts as a first step towards Graduate Registration with the SENr (a nationally recognised quality mark for your work in sports and exercise nutrition).

Specialist facilities

You’ll be able to use the fantastic range of facilities in our biomechanics and physiology labs: from measuring fitness through gas analysis, to measuring reaction forces on the Kistler Force Plate or capturing high-speed movements on our 3D motion analysis system.

Hear from one of our placement students

My placement with a company specialising in manufacturing food and sport supplements prepared me for the workplace as it provided an insight into the possible future career pathways, as well as the opportunity to develop essential time management and team working skills. Completing essays on the course improved not only my knowledge on the topics, but my time management and organisational skills. The lecturers were passionate about their modules and the lectures were practical.
