As an international student, you and your dependants (if any) will be required to pay a healthcare fee, which allows you to access the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK. The Immigration Health Surcharge or IHS fee is in addition to your visa application fee, and it is payable at the time of your online visa application submission.

The IHS fee for students (and their dependants) is £776 per-person for every twelve months of visa. The fee is calculated on the overall length of time of your visa. Whilst issuing Student visas the Home Office usually add an extra period at the end of your visa. This additional period varies between 7 days to 4 months depending on the overall duration of the course (see table below). The IHS fee for this additional period (7 days to 4 months) is £388. For example, if you are applying to study a 12-month master’s course, you will get visa for 16 months and you will be required pay a total of £1,164 (£776 for 12 months + £388 for the additional 4 months).

IHS refund

The IHS fee is refunded in full if your visa application is refused or if you withdraw your application before a decision has been made. The refund is automatically paid to the account or card you paid with. Find out more on IHS refund online at the GOV.UK website.
