Our Tests

Click on the drop-down arrows to find out a bit more about each of the tests we offer.

The BodPod system is a scientifically validated tool which uses air displacement to calculate your muscle mass and fat mass. The test involves sitting in a pod for approximately 5 minutes, for accurate results you will be required to wear minimal clothing. A swim suit is ideal.

A force plate measures the amount of force that is exerted on it. Jumping on a force plate allows us to measure a number of performance characteristics, for example we can measure the amount of explosive force generated by the body. If we use two force plates side by side we can measure any differences between left and right sides of the body. This test would be used to establish a baseline for explosive strength as well as to monitor changes in power output as a result of training or rehabilitation.

The First Threshold

This occurs at the exercise intensity at which blood lactate begins to rise above resting levels, termed Lactate Threshold (LT). It marks the shift from mainly aerobic (low intensity) exercise to exercise that requires some anaerobic energy contribution (moderate intensity) that produces lactate. Exercising at an intensity at or below this threshold is relatively easy and you should be able to maintain it for a long duration (hours).

The Second Threshold

This occurs at a much higher intensity than the lactate threshold and represents the highest intensity that you can maintain for approximately 30 minutes. At intensities that are more difficult than this threshold, lactate would accumulate quickly indicating a significant contribution from your anaerobic system which quickly leads to fatigue.

The Isokinetic Dynamometer (IKD) is capable of measuring muscle strength (torque) about any major joint in the body. This piece of equipment is ideal for establishing muscle imbalances and so potential risk of injury, as well as monitoring the effects of a training plan on performance or recovery from exercise.

This test will indicate how efficient your body is at using energy. You will run on a treadmill at a fixed submaximal speed. Wearing a mask over your nose and mouth throughout the test to allow respiration to be measured. The amount of oxygen consumed at a given speed is directly related to the amount of energy used.

This test is performed as a baseline measurement and then subsequent tests performed to track improvements in fitness as a result of a training programme.

This test will give an indication of your aerobic fitness. The test involves continuous exercise which gets more difficult every 1-minute. Initially, the exercise is easy and will gradually get harder using small increases in running speed and/or gradient (for treadmill protocols) or power output if being tested on a bike.

You will wear a mask over your nose and mouth throughout the test to allow respiration to be measured. This exercise test will last approximately 10-12 minutes and will be very tough towards the end.
