Sustainability and the Environment

Sustainability has never been more important. Looking after our planet is something we all share responsibility for, and small actions can make a big difference. At the University of Huddersfield, sustainability is part of everyday life on campus.

We’re working towards minimising our carbon emissions by 2030, investing in sustainably designed buildings, and creating plenty of opportunities for students to get involved – whether that’s through projects, volunteering, or developing skills you can take into your future career.

For us, sustainability isn’t just a long-term aim – it’s about making positive choices now and helping our students shape a better, greener future.

A forest of freshers

Did you know that we aim to plant one tree for every student who chooses to study with us?

The University is working in partnership with White Rose Forestand Kirklees Council on an exciting project to reforest areas of land within the local community, over the next two years.

Staff and students at the university can also attend Tree planting sessions and contribute to project.

Reduced Inequalities

We’re ranked 1st in the world for Reduced Inequalities in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings for 2025, which celebrate commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations.

Sustainable labs

When you study with us, you’ll have access to inspiring facilities that are run in a sustainable way.

47 of the labs in our School of Applied Sciences have achieved Bronze LEAF (Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework) accreditation, recognising their work towards running in a more efficient and environmentally friendly way.

Our Bronze award labs are now working towards Silver status, with other labs joining the framework as a commitment to sustainable practice and to gain LEAF accreditation.
