PhD Scholarship Proposal - The interpretation of unbuilt architecture and its narrative using digital techniques

This PhD aims to investigate the unbuilt architecture and its narrative.

This PhD studentship enables the student to explore how we can visually interpret the non-existing historical, demolished, unbuilt (on paper), or textually works of architecture using digital techniques, including virtual/mixed reality, game engines, and computer-aided architectural design. This doctoral thesis will explore a wide range of resources for the investigation, such as oral/textual histories, tangible/intangible heritage, archival materials, and collective memories.

This PhD studentship is theoretical and practical based, resulting in an enhanced understanding of the lost architecture, revealing undisclosed history, developing a comprehensive workflow involving analogue and digital representation, and an immersive representation which can be (re)experienced by the public.

The student will be supervised by Dr Yisi Liu, whose research interest covers a spectrum including digital heritage, computer-aided architectural design, narrativity in architecture, enhanced understanding of sustainability in architectural design using digital techniques, and multi-disciplinary research in architecture.
