PhD Scholarship - Performance magic (practice based) including conjuring, illusion, applied, and the digital. 

The School of Arts and Humanities at the University of Huddersfield are pleased to announce a PhD studentship in practice-based performance magic research in areas including, but not limited to 

  • performance practices of conjuring and illusion 
  • applied magic 
  • magic and the digital 
  • magic and the body 
  • the magician as character, archetype or trope 


This project will be supervised by Dr Nik Taylor who specialises in practice-led investigation into performance magic and storytelling. He is co-editor of The Journal of Performance Magic and writes on Bizarre Magick, Séance and the Gothic.  He is currently working on a monograph entitled Magic: The Performance Practice of Conjuring and Illusion 

This project offers a VC fee-waiver with an annual bursary at full UKRI level for 3 years* and is open to home students.
