The University of Huddersfield has entered the top 500 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027 for the first time.

The latest result sees the University leap into the 451-500 band and continues its upward trajectory in the rankings.

The THE World University Rankings assess universities across five pillars: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry income and international outlook. Performance is measured using 18 indicators covering factors such as reputation, research impact, knowledge transfer and international collaboration.

Scores across all five pillars increased for Huddersfield this year, with world rankings improving in three areas. Teaching saw the biggest rise, up 216 places, alongside increases in research quality and industry income, making Huddersfield the most improved university in Yorkshire across these three pillars.

Huddersfield improved its position in these World University Rankings after moving into the 501-600 band from 2024 onwards.

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Huddersfield, Professor Bob Cryan, commented: “I'm delighted that the long-term strategy of the University continues to bear fruit, with a ranking inside the top 500 in the world for the first time ever. Our colleagues and students, along with partners regionally, nationally and globally, have all contributed to this success. From our strong Yorkshire roots, we are achieving real global reach, for the benefit of our students and for societies and economies in Huddersfield and around the world.”

The 2027 edition of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings features a total of 2,296 institutions, spanning 118 countries and territories. A total of 110 universities are ranked from the UK.

New ranking bands make it easier to compare institutions and benchmark performance, featuring individual ranks up to 300 and then smaller bands moving down the table, with 18 bands altogether.

Times Higher Education also publishes a range of other global performance rankings, including the Sustainability Impact Rankings, which earlier this year saw the University of Huddersfield ranked as the world’s best in two categories linked to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

Huddersfield retained its number one ranking for SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities and was also ranked first in the world for SDG 1 – No Poverty, when the rankings were released in June.
