Professor Christine Jarvis and Dr Jenny Grainger join the University’s current five Companions of the Chartered Management Institute

BECOMING a Companion of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) is the highest accolade an individual can receive in recognition of their managerial skills and now, the award has been conferred on two further members of the University of Huddersfield’s Executive team.

Quoted by the CMI as being someone who has ‘already made their mark’, they are leaders who throughout their careers, ‘have managed successful organisations and demonstrated exceptional management skills’.

Newly-named Companions of the CMI are Professor Christine Jarvis, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Learning and Teaching, and Dr Jenny Grainger, Director of Marketing, Communications and Student Recruitment.

Professor Jarvis took up the role of Pro Vice-Chancellor in 2015 and oversees the University’s Teaching and Learning Strategy.  She also works closely with Schools and Services to secure an excellent student experience and works with registry to ensure the quality of the University’s provision.

Externally, Professor Jarvis is a board member of Go Higher West Yorkshire, a member of CERTA’s Access to Higher Education Committee, Chair of the Dewsbury Learning Trust, Chair of the Education and Training Foundation’s Advanced Teacher Status Steering Group and a member of its expert panel on professional standards and workforce development.

Managing the University’s corporate identity is the Director of Marketing and Communications Dr Jenny Grainger.  She is responsible for the central teams that look after public relations, the website, printed publications, digital marketing, alumni relations and student recruitment.

Dr Grainger’s additional qualifications include a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA), a Diploma in Marketing with the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) and she is also a Fellow of the CIM.  Dr Grainger is a member of the Governing Body at Calderdale College and represents the University on the board of the local community foundation, One Community.

The pair are the latest to be awarded the highest managerial mark of distinction by the Chartered Management Institute and join the University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bob Cryan CBE, Director of Estates and Facilities Colin Blair MBE, Director of Finance Andrew McConnell OBE, the University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tim Thornton, and Professor Liz Towns-Andrews, who is Director of Research and Enterprise.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Cryan praised Professor Jarvis and Dr Grainger by saying both managers had demonstrated their outstanding leadership and were highly effective members of the University Executive.

These latest awards are in addition to a rolling programme that will ultimately see more than 300 of the University’s managers become Chartered Managers (CMgr).
