Changing my uni and course through Clearing
I had been studying at another university, but I soon realised that neither the course nor the university was the right fit for me. When I contacted Huddersfield about Optometry, the admissions team suggested I submit an application and keep an eye on Clearing, as the course was already full.
As soon as Clearing opened, I applied, and within a couple of days the admissions tutor contacted me to request a manuscript, details of my relevant work experience and my CV. Shortly after submitting these, I received a phone call confirming that I had secured a place on the Optometry course.

“What made Huddersfield particularly appealing was its welcoming, community-focused atmosphere. I really value how quiet and safe the town feels, and its location between Manchester and Leeds offers the perfect balance of a peaceful environment with easy access to major cities.”
A positive process
Applying through Clearing was never something I had planned to do, but when I discovered the excellent opportunities that Huddersfield offers for Optometry, something clicked. I contacted the University for advice, where I got to speak to a professor from the course. I was able to discuss my options with him and he guided me on how to approach things going forward.
The whole process was surprisingly positive – although stressful at times because I didn’t know what to expect. However, the Clearing helpline team were incredible; they made everything straightforward and were genuinely focused on helping me throughout.
Career-focused course
What really stood out to me about Huddersfield’s Optometry course was the on-site opticians and the fact that the programme includes a built-in Master’s, which feels like a huge advantage.
I was also drawn to the amount of hands-on experience you get. As the course progresses, you start working with real patients, which is something I didn’t see offered as strongly elsewhere. By the time you reach third year, you’re able to run your own clinics at the University Valli Opticians on campus, an opportunity that really sets Huddersfield apart.
In the final year of the MOptom, the placement offered in collaboration with the College of Optometrists is another huge benefit. It allows you to continue building your professional and clinical skills in a real practice setting. This pathway means you can graduate with the MOptom and register directly with the General Optical Council as an optometrist, which is such a clear and supportive route into the profession.

“The course being approved by the General Optical Council and fully aligned with the new outcomes for optometry also reassured me that I’d be receiving training that meets the highest professional standards.”
Industry standard equipment
The facilities are excellent, particularly the on-site Valli Opticians, where patients from both the University and the wider community come for eye examinations and to choose glasses. The clinic is fully equipped with all the tools an optometrist would use daily and we get hands-on experience with this equipment during lectures and practical sessions.
The clinics are designed to closely resemble a real opticians, complete with dispensing labs where we can practice dispensing, adjusting, and measuring glasses, just as we would in major companies like Boots or Specsavers.

“My favourite part of the course is the practical sessions, which give me hands-on experience using tools like the slit lamp and other clinical equipment. With three to four practicals a week, I can directly apply and reinforce what we learn in lectures.”
Looking to the future
After I graduate, I hope to continue my studies, potentially pursuing a PhD in optometry or a related field. The course has supported me in this by providing a strong foundation of scientific knowledge and practical skills, while also offering guidance on the various pathways available after graduation.
The lecturers have been incredibly supportive, keeping us informed about research opportunities, career options and developments within the field. Their advice and encouragement have helped me understand the steps I need to take to progress into further study, and the hands-on experience I’ve gained throughout the course has given me the confidence to pursue advanced research and contribute meaningfully to the field of optometry.

“Overall, the combination of academic, careers and pastoral support has been exceptional, giving me the confidence and preparation I need to succeed both during my studies and beyond.”
An affordable and enjoyable place to live
Huddersfield is a quiet and comfortable place to live. My accommodation is clean, modern, and feels very safe, which makes settling in easy. The town itself is developing quickly. Since last summer, The Light has opened, offering bowling, axe throwing, a cinema and restaurants, making it a fun place for students and locals alike. There’s always something enjoyable to do, yet it remains affordable and easy to navigate.
A life-changing place to study
I would highly recommend Huddersfield to prospective students because it offers a unique combination of excellent teaching, outstanding facilities and a supportive environment that truly fosters personal and professional growth.
The lecturers are incredibly approachable and dedicated, always willing to provide guidance and support, whether it’s about academic work, placements, or career advice.
Beyond academics, Huddersfield has a welcoming and inclusive community, making it easy to feel part of a supportive network of staff and peers. For me, it’s more than just a university; it’s a place where you can explore your potential, develop your skills, and grow both academically and personally. It equips students not only to succeed in their studies but also to thrive in their future careers and become the best version of themselves.
