Financial Support for Care Experienced students

We recognise that students’ financial circumstances can change, and that some students may experience financial difficulties at different points during their studies. If you are care experienced, there are several sources of financial support available to help you during your time at university.

Care Experienced Bursary

If you are care experienced and planning to begin an undergraduate degree, you may be eligible for a Care Experienced Bursary of up to £2,000 per academic year.

This support is available to Home (UK) students studying full time on a three‑year undergraduate programme, or on a four‑year programme that includes a foundation year or sandwich year, for up to a maximum of four years.

This bursary is automatically awarded for each year of study, following a routine eligibility and verification check after enrolment. Unlike a loan, this support does not need to be repaid.

The bursary is paid by the University each academic year in instalments, typically £1000 in Term 1 and £1000 in Term 2.

Hardship Fund

The Hardship Fund provides non‑repayable financial support for eligible students who are experiencing temporary financial difficulties.

Applications can be made at any point during the academic year, helping to ensure support is available when it is needed.

Further information on the Hardship Fund and eligibility can be found here Finance, fees and payments - University of Huddersfield

The Student Success Bursary

The University offers a Student Success Bursary of up to £1000 over the duration of your programme of studies to support full time undergraduate, Home (UK) students.

This programme provides individualised coaching and guidance alongside financial support, helping students to progress confidently and achieve academic success.

The bursary is a non‑repayable grant designed to support students to engage with their studies and help them prepare for future career opportunities.

Cost of living

Huddersfield is a budget friendly option for being a student. Not only is it one of friendliest towns, it also offers a low cost of living, including being the second cheapest in the UK for student rent.
