What does a Barrister do

A Barrister is a specialist in advocacy and represents individuals or organisations in court. Usually hired by solicitors, barristers combine legal expertise with advocacy skills to help their clients get the best outcomes in court. They also provide legal advice and play a pivotal role in the justice system. 

Barristers usually have expertise in a specific area of law such as criminal law, employment law, family law, company law and civil law to name a few.

  • Around 80% of barristers are self-employed and work in offices called chambers alongside other barristers.

What you can earn as a Barrister

Depending on qualifications, location, reputation and area of practice, salaries can vary significantly for a barrister throughout their career. 

  • Individuals who are in training for their Bar qualification, earn a minimum of £20,703 per year in London or £18,884 outside of London.
  • Barristers with five years’ experience in commercial law and financial law see higher salaries ranging from £90,000 to £240,000.
  • Barrister's working in other areas such as criminal law or family law can expect lower salaries ranging from £30,000 to £150,000.
  • Barristers with ten years’ experience can earn between £60,000 and £500,000 which is again dependent on experience and location.
