Why Sociology

Do you want to understand other people and how they become the person that they are? Are you interested in the diversity and inequalities of our society? Are you concerned about the impact our society and culture may have on people’s lives? Do you want to know how society and individual lives can be changed for the better? If so, our Sociology courses will equip you with the knowledge and skills to go into the wider social world, consider it critically and begin to influence change in a positive way.

Throughout these courses you’ll develop a critical understanding of our society and culture from examining real-world events and contemporary scenarios, addressing some of the most challenging and controversial issues in society today. In your second year you’ll have the opportunity to develop your skills in the real world with a 30-hour compulsory work experience.

Our courses

Accredited courses

If you choose to study a sociology course, you’ll be eligible for student membership of the British Sociological Association (BSA), giving you access to resources, events, and networking opportunities via the BSA community. It could help you stand out from other candidates when it comes to finding employment.

Preparing you for your career

Our approach to learning positions employability and career development directly into your course content. You’ll have the opportunity to undertake a 30-hour compulsory work experience in your second year, where you’ll be able to put the sociological skills and knowledge gained on the course into practice. This will put you in a strong position to show employers you have the knowledge and skills they’re looking for. Previous students have undertaken placements with community organisations, in the voluntary sector, within the criminal justice system and commercial organisations.

You could also have the opportunity to study abroad for a term in your second year.

Taught by leading researchers

Our lecturers are all active researchers with their own diverse specialisms working across health, gender and sexuality, diversity, and equality and they will share their real-life experiences with you. Through their research and community engagement they have gained valuable experience of turning knowledge and understanding into practical activities. As a result, our teaching is always at the cutting edge of the discipline. You’ll be given the chance to draw on their skills to find your own career path, and if you’re passionate about something, we’ll help you build on that.

What our graduates say

The course laid a historic and conceptual framework for the work that I now do. It helped me understand the policies and methods employed to empower those with mental health problems and learning difficulties in a community setting. My work placement at a local community support group helped enormously in my current role. The course opened my eyes to the wide range of perspectives, was challenging yet engaging, and the lecturers were always there to support me.
