Why Optometry

Eyesight is one of our key senses and looking after people’s eyes is what optometrists do. If you want to pursue a fulfilling and exciting career in a rewarding health care profession, then optometry could be for you. Our Optometry MOptom degree is subject to approval by the General Optical Council and is fully aligned with the new standards for optometry. 

What you can do with a degree in Optometry

Optometry graduates may work in corporate optometry, in private independent practice (where you can start your own business), in hospital optometry working with other ophthalmic colleagues or in research and teaching.

Professional body accreditation

This Optometry MOptom is subject to approval by the General Optical Council and is fully aligned with the new standards for optometry, meaning you’re taking your first steps to becoming a qualified optometrist.

We have invested £18.2m in new science facilities and laboratories for Applied Sciences students including our purpose built, state-of-the-art University Eye Clinic here on campus. 

Placements in hospital eye departments

Gain real-world experience through attending a hospital placement during your final year. The placement provides real-world experience in an NHS eye department and gives you the opportunity to work with other professional colleagues.
