Did you know that this year over 500 students studied a modern foreign language at the University?
Did you know that every student at our University is entitled to learn a foreign language for free?
There are three ways to do so:
- Students can study a foreign language alongside their course on the University’s Languages for all programme. For this they need to apply to Modern Languages and then will be asked to pay a fee of £75. However, this fee will be re-reimbursed after successfully passing the exams.
- Students can choose a foreign language as their optional module for 20 credits in many courses.
- Students can take a degree that includes a modern foreign language (French/German/Spanish). They can do so as a beginner, post GCSE or post A’ level (60% + 40% language). With the start of the academic year 2019-2020 this will be offered in English, Linguistics and Hospitality students. We would be more than happy to discuss opportunities for your department to develop such degrees in your subject areas.
Languages on offer are: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish as well as Professional English for non- native students and also British Sign Language.
Due to Covid-19, all language modules will be taught online via Zoom/Teams for the entire academic year 2020-21.
The University of Huddersfield is an international market place with a great number of foreign students. In order to stay compatible and to attract more students it should build on this internationalism. As many universities are reducing their language provision, this is a good opportunity for the University of Huddersfield to stand out, possibly fill a niche in the market and in the process attract more students to Huddersfield.
Today we live in a globalised business environment, and knowing a second language as a graduate is an ability that will make our students stand out from the crowd.
Could you please help to spread the word amongst students during your induction sessions.
