The University of Huddersfield has launched a new Institute focusing on the application of Artificial Intelligence, which brings together academic expertise from right across the University.

The Institute for Applied Artificial Intelligence (IAAI) is the first fully cross-disciplinary research centre or institute at the University, encompassing researchers in Computing, Engineering, Health, Business, Sciences, Education, and the Arts, as well as professional staff, to create a truly interdisciplinary environment.

Led by Professor John Murray, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Teaching and Learning), who has a particular interest in Robotics and the ethical dimensions of AI systems, it is driven by Huddersfield’s strong foundation in AI-related research and the growing national need for AI-literate graduates.

The new Institute’s focus is to explore how AI can be developed and deployed responsibly to make our working lives more efficient. Its work also aligns with the Government’s Industrial Strategy, which highlights AI as a frontier industry in the growth-driving sector of Digital and Technologies.

Through interdisciplinary research and industrial partnerships, the Institute for Applied Artificial Intelligence will seek to demonstrate AI outcomes with real-world impact, positioning Huddersfield as a key contributor to the technology’s future.

Professor Murray, who is Professor of Robotics and Autonomous Systems, is also the first Pro Vice-Chancellor to head a research institute at the University. He commented: “This is an exciting opportunity to bring together the diverse AI research, training and teaching that is being carried out at the University. What’s unique about the Institute is how we are not only focusing on research and innovation, but also on how AI is delivered within the curriculum and embedded into processes and services across the university.”

Professor Monty Adkins, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), who helped establish the new institute, commented: “As AI increasingly shapes every part of our lives, responsible and thoughtful implementation is crucial. By exploring its potential across the arts, science, and health, the University of Huddersfield is advancing research in ways that are both innovative and ethical as well as delivering meaningful impact.”

Academic and professional colleagues will bring strategic insight, disciplinary expertise and operational support to the new Institute, and two Research Fellows are currently being recruited to work on key projects within the Institute.

The team comprises Professor Murray as Institute Director, Director of Research and Innovation Professor Parik Goswami, Chief Information Officer Krish Pilicudale, Professor of Cyber Security Simon Parkinson, Professor of Agentic AI Richard Hill, Professor of Artificial Intelligence Mauro Vallati, Professor of Pharmaceutical Analysis Laura Waters, Professor of Cognitive Science David Peebles, Professor of Entrepreneurship and Management Qihai Huang, Professors of Music Rupert Till and Jan Herbst, and Academic Skills Manager Dr Amanda Tinker.

In addition, the University has acquired two robots – Harold the Humanoid and Skye the Dog – to support pioneering research within the IAAI, particularly in the area of assisted living technologies, utilising the University’s Smart House research facility. Harold, in particular, is helping explore how robotics and AI can transform lives and shape the future of healthcare and independent living.
