Latest NSS results show Huddersfield is Yorkshire's most improved university

The University of Huddersfield is the most improved university in Yorkshire in the National Student Survey results for 2026, recording increases in all seven areas.

Known as the NSS, the annual survey is open to all final-year undergraduate students in the UK, who are invited to answer a series of questions across a variety of themes. These comprise Teaching on my course, Learning opportunities, Assessment and feedback, Academic support, Organisation and management, Learning resources and Student voice.

In the 2025/26 results, Huddersfield has not only improved in every NSS theme, it is also ranked first in Yorkshire and Humber for year-on-year improvement in four of these areas.

The highest scoring categories are Academic support (87.1 per cent), Teaching on my course (84.2 per cent) and Learning opportunities (83.4 per cent), with the biggest increases coming in Organisation and management (up 5.4 percentage points) and Student voice (up 4.6 percentage points).

When it comes to individual subjects, Midwifery at Huddersfield is ranked top in the region in six out of the seven NSS themes. The highest scoring theme is Teaching on my course which received 99.3 per cent positive feedback.

Nationally, Huddersfield is ranked top for Organisation and management in the Building subject area and Architecture is in the top quartile for five out of the seven themes.

Pro Vice-Chancellor for Teaching and Learning, Professor Jane Owen-Lynch, commented on the results: “These results reflect the hard work and dedication of colleagues across the University who are committed to providing an outstanding student experience. We are particularly pleased to see improvements across all seven NSS themes, with significant gains in organisation and management and student voice. We remain committed to ensuring our students receive the highest quality teaching, support and learning opportunities throughout their time at Huddersfield.”

The results of the 2026 Survey highlight the University’s commitment to world-class teaching, which was recognised when it was selected as the first winner of HEA’s Global Teaching Excellence Award in 2017.

The University is also second in the country for the number of National Teaching Fellowships marking the UK’s best lecturers in Higher Education, winning a total of 24 since 2008. Huddersfield is also the number one ranked mainstream university in the UK for the proportion of teaching staff with higher degrees and teaching qualifications.

The NSS is an independent survey compiled by the Office for Students to gather final year undergraduate students’ opinions on their course. The latest results are available online at the OfS website.
