Multi-talented karate athlete and business student Amritpal Kaur is targeting more success thanks to the help of the university’s Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme.

Amritpal, who is studying a MA in Business Management, won the gold medal in the female kumite 55kg category at last year’s British Karate Federation Championships in Sheffield and is now aiming for a world ranking and a place at the Commonwealth Karate Championships in November 2026.

Hailing from Delhi in India, Amritpal chose Huddersfield due to the Business School’s excellent global reputation. She joined as part of the university’s Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) dual career programme, which supports elite athletes with academic flexibility, multi-disciplinary support (S&C, Physio, Psychology and lifestyle) and competition entry to ensure they perform at the highest sporting and academic levels.

“The university supported me greatly by ensuring a quick registration for the competition, providing access to gym facilities for my training, and offering immediate assistance whenever needed,” says Amritpal. “This backing gave me the confidence to perform at my best on the day of the event.”

Ben Severn, Performance & Partnerships Manager at the University, added, “We are so proud of Amrit and her achievements so early into her University life. She has shown dedication and professionalism and the ability to compete on the highest of levels. Being a TASS accredited site allows us to ensure she receives the support she needs as well as a high-end education, all whilst settling into a new country.”

Amritpal trains at the University facilities and also at Kirkburton Karate Club, where she coaches junior aspiring karate athletes sharing her knowledge and experience.
