Qualification rate for apprenticeships rises as pass rate reaches 100 per cent

Apprenticeship provision at the University of Huddersfield now has an overall 100 per cent pass rate on top of an increased Qualification Achievement Rate (QAR), the latest data shows.
The Department for Education (DfE) figures for 2024/25 indicate an improved picture for Huddersfield, with both performance indicators on the rise – the QAR up from 87.6 per cent to 88.0 per cent, and the pass rate up from 99.5 per cent to a full 100 per cent.
This comes on the back of the University having the best QAR in 2023/24 for university providers in England with more than 100 apprentices when the full set of data was released earlier this year. It is expected that the sector-wide data for the latest year will be released in early 2026.
Brian Culleton, Director of Apprenticeships at the University, commented: “The reason for this success is due to the exceptional work of our academic teams. Our teaching colleagues undertake diligent competency interviews with every apprentice prior to enrolment, which allows them to create an individual training plan for each learner. Our academic colleagues also provide excellent teaching on the course, and they provide tailored support to learners who experience any change in personal circumstances or a return from a break in learning.”

The two different rates can be explained as follows: the achievement rate measures the university’s overall success in seeing apprentices through their entire journey from enrolment to qualification, and it includes those who drop out or leave early. The pass rate focuses purely on the quality of the training, measuring only the proportion of apprentices who successfully pass their end-point assessments after completing the full training period.
The QAR figure is generally viewed as the measure by which you can judge a provider’s overall effectiveness and gives both employers and apprentices additional confidence in the quality of individual providers.
If both figures are high, it is an excellent indicator that the training is well-delivered, the course is well-managed and that learners are supported to achieve success.

The University offers a number of higher and degree apprenticeships, which are a way for employers to support their staff to study for university qualifications. Apprentices spend part of their time at the University and the remainder at their place of work, benefitting from on-the-job training, enhanced by their degree education.
Awarded the highest possible grade of Outstanding by Ofsted for its apprenticeship provision, the University is the largest provider of apprenticeships in nursing and allied health in Yorkshire and the Humber, with more than 800 apprentices across all courses currently.
