About the QS World University Rankings

The QS World University Rankings provide an authoritative comparative analysis of the performance of 15,703 individual university programmes at 1,594 universities in 93 locations around the world, across 54 academic disciplines and five broad Faculty Areas.

Based on its number of top-100 programmes, the UK is home to the world’s second strongest higher education system. In terms of its total number of ranked programmes across the 54 subject tables, the UK is also the second most-represented territory in the world.

QS uses five key metrics to compile the subject rankings. Reputation indicators are based on the responses of 150,000 academics and 99,000 employers to QS surveys while Citations per Paper and H-Index measure research impact and productivity. International Research Network (IRN) is used to assess cross-border research collaboration.

This year, three new academic disciplines have been included in the QS World University Rankings by Subject: Data Science, Marketing and History of Art. QS welcomes feedback from the global higher education community as it seeks to expand these tables for future iterations.
