Three new talented KTP Associates join the University’s Knowledge Transfer Partnership programme

THEY say good things happen in threes and this has certainly been the case with the University of Huddersfield’s latest trio of ‘Knowledge Transfer Partnerships’ which have all commenced within a few weeks of one another.

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs) are part-funded by UK Research and Innovation through Innovate UK. The KTP programme is part of the Government’s Industrial Strategy and aims to help businesses to improve their competitiveness and productivity through the better use of knowledge, technology and skills that reside within the UK knowledge base.

“The KTP programme is a strategic focus for the University of Huddersfield and a number of them have received national recognition for their success from Innovate UK,” said Laura Forester-Green, who is the University’s KTP Manager.

“We are pleased to be able to welcome in quick succession three new additions to the University’s KTP programme. Each project is quite diverse, but we have three competent and committed KTP Associates Francesca, Gayathri and Dorin, to drive things forward,” she said.

“We look forward to supporting their different journeys and hearing how they progress in their roles, sharing their success along the way.”

The new KTP Associates

Dorin Cernat

Business Development Manager at Coterie

“I have always been keen to work in project/product management. The idea of building an efficient and optimised product that an end user can use and being involved in basically all the product development stages, is exciting. Before coming to Coterie, I was working in a large regional bank in Central and Eastern Europe. After three years of working in different product management roles, I had fallen into my comfort zone and felt I had to seek a new experience/ job opportunity. While searching the web for exciting job opportunities, I came across the KTP Associate - Business Development Manager vacancy on the University’s website. I was very thrilled about being selected for this role, as it aligned with my career aspirations and project management journey. The KTP joint project between Coterie and the University aims to create an international platform/ industry body for the niche area of partner marketing that will help address an unmet need of improving skills in this industry, ensuring that members have access to up to date, academically informed, insights and innovations. It is one of those projects that has substantial mutual benefits for all of its many stakeholders/parties which is something you do not come by very often.”

Dr Francesca Elliott

Heritage Manager at Pennine Heritage

“Pennine Heritage is a charity based in Hebden Bridge which works to preserve and promote the history, culture, and environment of the South Pennines. Based in the historic Birchcliffe Centre, a Grade II listed former chapel, Pennine Heritage is home to the South Pennine Archives, as well as a number of event spaces and tenant businesses. Until now, Pennine Heritage has mainly been run by a dedicated group of volunteers, so as KTP Associate I am the charity’s first professional Heritage Manager. The purpose of this KTP is to professionalise operations at Pennine Heritage, identify new income streams and grow existing streams, increase outreach and public engagement, and create lasting links with the University of Huddersfield. Having started in November, I have already been creating new connections with the University by supervising placement students and collaborating with academics on upcoming outreach projects. The collaborative nature of this KTP is well suited to my experience as I recently completed a collaborative PhD at the University of Manchester and the Science and Industry Museum. This experience means I am used to working between a university and a heritage organisation and have a combination of academic expertise and public heritage experience. This allows me to take full advantage of the many opportunities presented by the KTP, ensuring that Pennine Heritage can benefit from cutting-edge research at the University, while academics and students gain new engagement opportunities through the charity's facilities and networks.”

Gayathri Kopattil

Product Designer & Developer at Paxman Coolers Ltd

“I am a BSc (Hons) Product Design graduate from the University of Huddersfield and recently joined as a KTP Associate with the University and Paxman Coolers Limited to support the design and development of an innovative cryo-compression delivering device and accessories. This device is developed for prevention of a dose limiting side effect of chemotherapy called Chemotherapy Induced Peripheral Neuropathy (CIPN), which is a clinically unmet need. During my placement year I worked with the University's Paxman Innovation and Research Centre designing a new scalp cooling cap to prevent hair loss in cancer patients following chemotherapy treatment. For my final year project, I was also working on a product to treat Peripheral Neuropathy, a debilitating chronic pain condition. I was keen to apply for the KTP role because it seemed to be a wonderful opportunity and essentially, I could explore my interest in CIPN further. A few weeks into the project I am now working with a wonderful team and find my role very exciting.”
