On Monday 23 September at 11.30am Ruth Sivori, Head of Human Resources and Olivia Briddon, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Officer will be joined by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bob Cryan and representatives of the University LGBTQI+ Staff network, as well as the Equality Officer from the Students’ Union to celebrate the occasion at the beginning of National Inclusion Week.
The University wanted to add a touch of LGBTQI+ visibility and pride by painting the crossing in the rainbow flag colours associated with the LGBTQI+ community. “We hope it signals to staff, students and visitors that we are proud to support and welcome the LGBTQI+ community. We constantly strive to maintain our culture of diversity and inclusivity and hope this also helps to raise awareness of the issues faced by the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. Earlier this year, we were delighted to sponsor Huddersfield Pride that was organised by our Students’ Union. The University is a proud member of Stonewall’s Global Diversity Champions programme” Siobhan Moss, Director of Human Resources said.
We are also flying the Bi-Pride Flag near the rainbow crossing to mark Bi Visibility Day, also known as International Celebrate Bisexuality Day. This day celebrates members of the bisexual community and those who support them, highlighting also the challenges they can face. We want to support all our staff and students to feel comfortable about being open at the University.
The University welcomes and supports the development of staff networks. Our staff networks provide an opportunity for staff who share a protected characteristic to network, obtain peer support and share information. They can also offer opportunities for staff to inform university policy on equality-related issues and topics.
We have four staff networks at the University:
Come and chat to members of our networks on Monday in the Oastler Building Atrium between 12.00noon and 1.00pm.
The networks are always looking for new members, input and ideas, so please take a look at the terms of reference and contact the Chair if you are interested in joining.
