The University of Huddersfield has backed a pledge to support technicians and to safeguard vital technical skills moving forward by becoming a proud signatory of the Technician Commitment. The Technician Commitment is a sector-wide initiative led by the Science Council, supported by the Gatsby Foundation, to address key challenges facing technical staff working in teaching and research.
The University signed the “Technician Commitment” on 20 May 2019 and will now attend the official launch ceremony inducting the University into the Technician Commitment on 24 June 2019 with 75 Institutes currently already supporting this initiative.
In signing up to the commitment, the University has pledged to take ongoing action around key challenges affecting the technical community and take part in an annual assessment of the impact of actions taken to evaluate our progress.
Siobhan Campbell (Director of Human Resources), the institutional lead, said “We are proud to be one of the 75 institutions that have signed up to the Technician Commitment, which is a great opportunity for us to support a key area that will improve and safeguard vital technical skills. Our technicians are a highly valued and crucial part of the excellent teaching and research that takes place at this University - this commitment will help the University provide the visibility, recognition, career development and sustainability they deserve.”
Moving forward the Technician Commitment Working Group will seek the views and feedback of technical staff as regards initiatives and activities under the Commitment, and promote these amongst technical staff members. A new area on the University’s website, specifically for Technicians, will be created to provide information and resources to support this initiative linked to the action plan developed from the recent feedback meetings.
