The Occupational Health Department would like to draw your attention to National No Smoking Day on Wednesday 13 March. If you are a smoker, this is a perfect opportunity to stop smoking once and for all.
There are lots of reasons to stop smoking:
- You will improve your health. Quitting smoking lowers your risk of diabetes, lets blood vessels work better, and helps your heart and lungs. Life expectancy for smokers is at least 10 years shorter than that of non-smokers. Quitting smoking before the age of 40 reduces the risk of dying from smoking-related disease by about 90%.
- You will save money. The average smoker has 13 cigarettes a day, which works out as 364 cigarettes a month. That's £141 a month and £1,696 a year that you could be saving by not smoking.
- You will protect the health of those around you. By not exposing those around you to second-hand smoke, you will reduce the chances of them suffering from bronchitis, pneumonia, asthma attacks, meningitis and ear infections.
The NHS provide many sources of support for smoking cessation, including local stop smoking services, speaking to expert advisors online or on the phone, smartphone apps and social media support. Find out more about the services available from Smokefree.
The stop smoking service local to the Huddersfield area is Kirklees Smoking Cessation Primary Care and Community Provision or email Public Health Commissioning.
