Whether you’re new to the University or returning, join us this year in creating a greener campus.

We’re working hard at making our campus and operations more sustainable. That includes making sure our new buildings are environmentally friendly, installing energy and water saving technology, reducing our use of resources from paper to chemicals, recycling our waste, and working with local and global communities to become a more socially responsible organisation. Read about our progress in our latest Sustainability Highlights Report.

To help you do your bit, here are seven ways you can Be Green today:

  1. Bring your reusable mug. University eco-cups, made of organic rice husk, are now available to buy in Huddersfood outlets. You’ll get a 20p discount on hot drinks each time you use one. You can also fill your reusable water bottle at refill points around campus.
  2. Recycle more. We implemented a new campus-wide recycling scheme in 2016. Please use the bins to recycle all your paper, cardboard, plastic bottles and cans. Find out more in our guide to recycling on campus
  3. Eat well. The foods we serve on campus have a number of sustainability accreditations. The freshly-cooked dishes in our International Kitchen are made with only Red Tractor assured meat and MSC certified fish. All our coffee is either Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance or Organic certified. We’ve achieved a Good Egg Award for switching to higher welfare eggs. Visit Huddersfood outlets on campus and look for the labels.
  4. Travel light. Walk, bike or take public transport when possible. We have over 150 cycle parking spaces and a range of shower facilities on campus. Discounted student travel passes are available for buses and trains in West Yorkshire. Staff can also get travel passes through Employee Benefits. Save carbon emissions, be healthier and travel actively.
  5. Switch it off. Please remember to switch off lights, PC’s and equipment when you’ve finished using them. It all adds up to help save energy and reduce our carbon emissions. Discover more energy saving tips in our guide.
  6. Buy Fairtrade. We’ve supported Fairtrade for over 10 years at the University and we work closely with community partners to make Kirklees a Fairtrade Borough. Look out for the Fairtrade logo and buy Fairtrade products on campus to improve the lives of global food producers.
  7. Talk to us. How else can we go green? Everyone has a part to play in making sure our local and global activities are sustainable. Our sustainability policies and plans commit us to ambitious goals for protecting the environment, but we want to hear your ideas to shape how these are delivered. Email your suggestions to  or meet us for a face-to-face chat.

Have a great year and Be Green!
