The University has launched an A-Z Reuse, Recycling and Waste Guide to advise students and staff how to deal with all kinds of waste on campus. We’ve highlighted some key points below – the things we often get asked about - but please take a moment to read or bookmark the guide for future reference.

Did you know?

  1. Coffee cups - to recycle or not to recycle? At present please use the general waste bins for all take-away coffee cups, even those marked as recyclable or compostable. Disposable cups are generally not accepted for recycling by the waste industry as they are made from a combination of card and plastic which is difficult to recycle. We are working on solutions to reduce this type of waste, but you can help avoid it completely by bringing a reusable mug or buying a University Eco Cup which will save you 20p off most hot drinks on campus.
  2. Batteries - it is against the law to put batteries in general waste bins on campus. We have specific recycling bins for these located in central areas of campus. Find your nearest battery bin in the guide.
  3. Crisp packets –please use the general waste bins for wrappers from crisps, chocolate bars and sweets. These are normally made of composite materials and cannot be recycled.
  4. Pizza boxes - please use the pizza box recycling point in International Kitchen, Student Central building for your empty pizza boxes. If you’re not nearby then please use the general waste bins instead.
