Journalism Students work with Sky and ITV

More than 20 University of Huddersfield journalism students helped Sky News cover the general election.

Broadcast Journalism students from the 2nd and 3rd years were sent across the north of England and Midlands, from Chorley to Warwickshire, to deliver live coverage of the counts and all-important declarations.

They used cameras to broadcast the results for Sky's election night programme on TV and online, and kept followers updated on Twitter. They were all paid for what was a long night's work.

Some of the students even got to cover the night's most hard-fought battles including the Labour gain in Colne Valley, as well as Shipley where Conservative Philip Davies narrowly held on.

With 12 Sports Journalism students working for ITV across Yorkshire and other students also involved in coverage with radio stations and local websites, election night was yet another example of the University's trainee journalists getting out of the classroom and gaining valuable real-world experience.

University of Huddersfield lecturer and former Sky News journalist Richard Jones said: "This was one of the most dramatic election nights in recent history, and for our students to have taken part for a major broadcaster shows just how well-prepared they are for careers in the media."
