The Home Office is replacing all physical visas e.g. visa stickers in passports and Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) with an online immigration system called an eVisa. This means when your Student Visa application is successful, your eVisa will be linked with your passport.

What is an eVisa?

An eVisa is a digital immigration document that confirms your visa status and allows UK organisations i.e. universities, employers and landlords etc. to verify your immigration status in the UK.

Your eVisa should display your name, date of birth, nationality, immigration status (e.g. Student Route), and the start and end dates of your visa. It should also include the University of Huddersfield’s sponsor licence number.

How to get access to your eVisa?

New students applying for visa outside the UK

You should follow the student visa online application process to apply for your Student Visa. As part of the application, it will prompt if you need to create a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account as part of the application process. You must complete this step before travelling to the UK.

  • If you are asked to use the 'UK Immigration: ID Check’ mobile app to create a UKVI account, you will be able to access your eVisa when your application is successful.
  • Alternatively, if you receive a Visa decision email from UKVI confirming that your visa application is successful, you must follow the steps in this email to create a UKVI account so that your passport can be linked to your eVisa.

Once your passport is linked, you will be able to view your eVisa online.

Current students who are already in the UK

If you're applying for a new Student Visa whilst in the UK, you'll be advised to use the 'UK Immigration: ID Check' app, which means you will be able to access your eVisa when your application is successful.

Follow Step 7 in our guide to access your eVisa for further information on proving your immigration status and getting a share code.

Further information on eVisas

Traveling with your eVisa

You must make sure your eVisa is linked to your passport in your UKVI account and that the details are correct before you travel. Your carrier may not let you travel if your details are incorrect, which may cause delays for you at the UK border.

Report errors on your eVisa

You must check your eVisa for any errors. Errors on your eVisa e.g. details being incorrect or technical issues with accessing your eVisa and UKVI account must be reported as soon as you notice these.

If you have spotted an error, you can also seek advice from an immigration adviser by attending one of our online Immigration Drop-in Sessions.
