What I liked about Huddersfield
I chose to study at the University of Huddersfield because of the short commute from where I live and how easy it is to navigate the campus.
The location of the campus means that it’s easy to walk into town on your dinner breaks or walk to and from the student halls, most of which are a five-to-ten minute walk away. Also, compared to other unis, I was impressed by how many different societies and opportunities there were through the Students’ Union.
My sister studied at Huddersfield too, and I was impressed by how much support the University offered her in gaining some great opportunities whilst she was studying here.

Getting to know Huddersfield
The Open Day at Huddersfield was very informative and allowed me to see what facilities the University had to offer. The subject sessions and talks were very useful too and helped me to solidify my course choice. The day also gave me an opportunity look at the different accommodations on offer and explore the town that I would be living in.
After I applied to the University, I was invited to an Applicant Visit Day, and I would very much recommend these days to other applicants. For me, this was a good opportunity to talk to the course tutors and meet some of the students already studying the course. It also gave me a chance to take part in activities related to my course, giving me a taste of what studying here for the next three years would be like. This helped me to decide whether committing to the course was the right decision for me.
“I preferred the layout and overall teaching style of the Filmmaking course at Huddersfield compared to other universities I looked at. The course here gives you more opportunity to explore your options within filmmaking by providing the chance to trial all the main job roles on offer in the industry.”
Choosing to study Filmmaking
I was attracted to the Filmmaking course at Huddersfield because of the industry standard facilities available here at the Uni. When looking at the course, I liked how much creative freedom there was and that I would have the opportunity to create films.
I also liked how practical and hands-on the course is with it mainly involving coursework and creating physical films, with no exams. Plus, we also have access to training with course technicians, which helps aid our understanding of camera, sound and lighting operations.

Professional facilities
My course is based in the Stewart Film Studios building on campus. This building houses a large studio area with three separate bays, each with its own light rig attached to the ceiling. There is also a range of equipment here, such as lighting, cameras and sound equipment. As film students, we have access to this building and equipment anytime and we can book the whole studio out when it’s available.
We also have access to the Barbara Hepworth building, where we have a computer lab called the CAD lab, which gives us access to industry standard software that we need for post-production editing. There are also vending machines and a café, which is a great place to go for a bite to eat on your breaks.

“One of my favourite things about my course is that it gives me access to industry standard equipment which I really enjoy learning and using. We get a weekly four hour session in the film studio that allows us to work hands-on with the equipment on offer.”
Working as a Student Ambassador
I applied to be a Student Ambassador because it gave me the opportunity to explore the campus more and know more about what's on offer to us on site. My role as a Student Ambassador mainly sees me working the Uni Open Days. I’ve been in charge of running campus tours and taking guests to the buildings they want to see. I really enjoy this work as it allows me to share my own experiences with prospective students as well as giving them a tour of the campus I’ve grown to love.
“I really enjoy living in Huddersfield as compared to many other university locations, the accommodation and the cost of living is a lot cheaper.”
Student accommodation in Huddersfield
What’s great about Huddersfield is that there are many different accommodation options to chose from. I chose Castings student halls mainly because it’s right next door to the film studios, which is very helpful for those early morning starts.
The accommodation here is very affordable and offers a good-sized space that gives you everything you need, such as a desk for studying, and a kitchen for cooking and socialising. My flat houses six students and within the kitchen we have two fridges, and overall it’s a good size for the number of people who live there. Plus, my accommodation is just a 10-minute walk from Lidl where I do my food shopping.
“The University is very welcoming and diverse, providing great opportunities for people from different backgrounds, whilst celebrating everyone’s unique differences through regular events.”
My favourite thing about Huddersfield
My favourite thing about studying at Huddersfield is the community feel and the variety of facilities on offer. For example, in the Student Central building, there is a gym with student discounts available, the Library, a shop, cafeteria and a coffee shop. The Students' Union and HudLets accommodation service are also based here too.
Why you should choose Huddersfield
I would recommend the University of Huddersfield because it has everything you need, such as student accommodation within walking distance of the campus, which will save you money on using public transport. Plus, the Uni is directly opposite the town centre, where there are a variety of shops and places to eat on your lunchbreak.
The University also offers a lot of support, such as the Wellbeing team. I saw this as a huge positive when looking at Huddersfield, as I knew that there was a place for me to go if I ever needed help.
The University of Huddersfield is a tight knit community that makes you feel safe and secure when you’ve moved to a new town for your studies. I was nervous about coming to uni but my experience here has been nothing but positive. This University has made me feel so welcome and I am now happy to call it my home.
