Absolutely. AI and data skills are widely seen as essential for current job markets. Data Science and Applied AI MSc (Distance Learning) is a conversion course and is suitable route for those who wish to transition from their current fields to AI.

Students often express concern about programming, especially Python and algorithmic modules, however we will fully support you in developing these skills from beginner level upwards, giving you the confidence to work with data from day one of study.

I'm Subject Area Leader for Computing and Information Systems in the School of Computing and Engineering at the University of Huddersfield. I am also the Deputy Director of the Centre for Autonomous and Intelligent Systems and an Associate Member of the Northern Productivity Hub.

About

I joined the University of Huddersfield in 2015 as a Research Assistant and served subsequently as a Research Fellow, Lecturer and Senior Lecturer. My teaching and research interests fall within the field of Artificial Intelligence. On the teaching side, I am passionate about developing the next generation of computer scientists and artificial intelligence engineers who will spearhead the next phases of the AI revolution we are witnessing. On the research side, I am driven by the need for intelligent solutions that not only provide value to businesses and users but also deliver explainable decisions that can support positive transformation at business and society levels.

I have taught and led a wide range of modules at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, in face-to-face and distance learning mode, primarily on Artificial Intelligence and Software Engineering. I’ve also led the development of new modules and courses in Artificial Intelligence, including modules on Knowledge Representation and Reasoning and Large-Scale Software Engineering and our BSc(Hons) Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence and MSc Applied Artificial Intelligence courses. I’ve supervised students in a wide range of projects for undergraduate, postgraduate taught and postgraduate research programmes.

Research

My research within Artificial Intelligence has mainly focused on Knowledge Representation and Reasoning, Machine Learning and Explainability, as well as applications in Supply Chains, Smart Homes, Service-oriented Computing and Cloud Computing. I have secured more than £1m worth of funding as PI and co-I from Innovate UK and UKRI. I have authored over 50 papers in books, journals, and conference and workshop proceedings and my research has received more than 1700 citations. I have also acted as a reviewer for over 60 international journals, conferences and workshops.

PhD in Computer Science from the University of Crete, Greece – Thesis Title: A Novel Specification and Composition Language for Services.

MSc in Computer Science from the University of Crete, Greece – Thesis Title: The Frame Problem in Web Service Specifications.

I’m a Reader (Associate Professor) in Artificial Intelligence at the University of Huddersfield. I’m the Course Leader for the online and on-campus Artificial Intelligence MSc and for the Applied Artificial Intelligence MSc online and on-campus version. I’m the Team Lead on AI for Health and Wellbeing at the Centre for Autonomous and Intelligent Systems.

About

I joined the University of Huddersfield in 2017 as a Research Fellow and have since progressed to Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, and now Reader in my field. I’ve led the development of new modules and courses in Artificial Intelligence, including Machine Learning, Data-driven AI, and the MSc programs in Artificial Intelligence and Applied Artificial Intelligence. My teaching focuses on machine learning and data-driven analytics, with key modules such as Machine Learning, Case Studies in Data Analytics and AI, and Introduction to Data Analytics. I’ve provided supervision across a wide range of projects for both taught and research students. I enjoy and actively engage in frontline research and data science programming, consistently publishing as lead author since 2015.

Research

My research in AI has primarily focused on probabilistic machine learning, sequence modelling and affective computing, with their applications in wellbeing and mental health.

I’ve published over 60 peer reviewed papers in leading international journals and conferences, including a lead-authored paper selected as IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy System Publication Spotlight Article by IEEE Computational Intelligence Society.

I’ve edited two book volumes and organised several special issues in journals such as Artificial Intelligence in Medicine and Frontiers in Neuroscience. I am also an Editorial Board Member for several leading journals in my field, where I actively contribute to the peer review process, evaluate manuscripts for publication, and promote cutting-edge research.

I’m very keen at translating AI techniques into real-world applications particularly the wellbeing and mental health domain with research supported and funded by Innovate UK, Research England, EPSRC, NHS and industrial partners.
