Research Centres within the Department of Computer Science

In the School of Computing and Engineering, we have a vibrant and rapidly growing research community with world-class research in several key areas. We are creating knowledge by working closely with industry colleagues to ensure that our research has a real impact on society.

Our research activity is organised around our Research Institutes and Research Centres all of which carry out world-class research in their specific areas. Within these Institutes and Centres, there are smaller research groups, each with a specific research theme. Our research has expanded significantly over the last 5 years with our research income increasing from £3.4M in 2013 to £11.9M in 2020. In the 2021 REF, we submitted 112 FTE staff under the Engineering and Computing and Informatics Units of Assessment.

Researchers in computer science are working on visualisation, information and systems engineering and intelligent systems. Our facilities are industry standard, incorporating a dedicated computer networking, mobile and forensic computing laboratory, as well as creative studio environments and industry-standard software. Our aim is to research and develop new methods and technologies in computer science that will have a real impact on global grand challenges in areas such as transport, health, security, and energy.
