We have an ongoing relationship with many areas of the industry including the BBC, ITV, SKY, PA Press Association, The Times, NME and a wide range of local media and communications companies. Are students are able to take advantage of placements and listen to experts during visiting lectures.
Our Broadcast Journalism BA(Hons) has been accredited by the British Journalism Training Council (BJTC). The members of the accreditation panel were particularly impressed by the commitment to detail that the course offered and the level of quality of work that was produced by our current students.
Journalism and Media at Huddersfield has formal and informal ties with the BBC, primarily at Manchester but also at Leeds. We offer our students the opportunity to apply to attend regular events organised by the BBC such as BBC Splash (for sports journalists) and Create and Connect (for Broadcast Journalists).
We also send our very best students on four-week work placements at BBC Radio and BBC Television in their final year.
BBC producers and directors frequently visit Huddersfield to lead workshops and provide advice and contribute to assessed practical work. Students on the Broadcast Journalism course have the opportunity to pitch programme ideas to BBC producers, with the best ideas being made into programmes and assessed as part of their coursework.
Nina Hossain visits Journalism and Media
Olivia Johnson (Print Journalism and Media BA(Hons – now named Journalism BA) reported on her visit:
“As a third year Journalism student I was intrigued, fascinated and in awe when ITV’s Nina Hossain came to talk to us. As soon as she walked in the room she commanded the attention of everyone; she was friendly, honest and armed with more knowledge about the ‘biz’ than I think anyone expected.
Throughout her talk, Nina interacted with us and gave compelling advice about the ‘insecure and difficult media industry’. When asked if her appearance had helped her go far in the industry she replied ‘It’s been a rude awakening of how difficult the industry is – I always go to work looking the best I possibly can, without becoming distracting. I’d do this in an office job as well – it’s just professionalism. I think I’ve proved my worth now anyway and advise you to take every opportunity that comes your way’.
AJE MEMBERSHIP
Journalism and Media at Huddersfield is a member of the Association for Journalism Education, a body founded in 1997 to develop good practice in journalism education in the UK and to provide a discussion forum for academic staff.
Each year, the Association organises conferences where journalism lecturers from throughout the UK gather to discuss emerging trends and new ideas for teaching at both under- and postgraduate level. The conferences also discuss strategies and advice on helping students to gain work after graduating - many of the conference topics related to employability, including work placement opportunities.
The Association has its own publication, launched in 2012 - Journalism Education - to which our staff can contribute.

Journalism and Media is also a member of the Media, Communication and Cultural Studies Association, which represents those who teach or research in Higher Education in film and TV studies, media production, journalism, radio, photography, creative writing, publishing, interactive media and the web.
