Meningitis is inflammation of the membranes that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. Some bacteria that cause meningitis can also cause septicaemia (blood poisoning).

Types of meningitis:

Symptoms of meningitis:
- Fever
- Headache
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Muscle pain
- Stomach cramps
- Fever with cold hands and feet
- Drowsy or difficult to wake
- Confusion and irritability
- Pale blotchy skin, sports or rash
- Stiff neck
- Dislike of bright lights
- Convulsions or seizures
