Do Androids Dream of Subtlety and Nuance?: The role of human-machine collaboration in same-language subtitling.
On Thursday 12 February at 2.00pm, Dr Emma Andrews, Research Fellow in the School of Arts and Humanities, will be delivering an online talk on the role of human-machine collaboration in same-language subtitling.
Emma will discuss the value of human same-language subtitlers in an increasingly automated field. Whilst same-language subtitles are often seen as a word-for-word transcription of spoken information, this talk approaches it as a component of wider translation studies. Alongside identifying the benefits that auto-subtitling and AI generated subtitles can bring as well as some of the challenges this technology can address, this presentation will also demonstrate the complexities of creating 'accurate' subtitles and provide justification for the value of continued human input to the wider subtitling process.
