The Rt Hon. J H Whitley was Liberal MP for Halifax from 1900-1928 and Speaker of the House of Commons from 1920-1928. In his memory the University of Huddersfield and Whitley Family have held an annual lecture since 2012 following the Whitley family's generous donation of the J.H. Whitley collection in October 2011 with the University of Huddersfield. This fascinating archive is owned by the University and it includes books, journals, newspaper articles and letters from J.H. Whitley’s career in politics and public service. The archive is housed in Heritage Quay, situated on the University Campus.
This year’s lecture will feature and ‘In Conversation’ style lecture from the current Speaker of the House, Sir Lindsay Hoyle MP, looking at the comparison between the challenges of the speakership today and those of J H Whitley 100 years ago.
