Subject Reviews Reboot
Subject Reviews reboot
As you may be aware, subject reviews have been paused for the last couple of years for various reasons. Following UTLC’s recent approval of new subject review groupings, we will be piloting a rebooted subject review process for 2025.
Why do we hold subject reviews?
Subject reviews are important because they trigger another 5 year validation period for any courses within a subject area that have not had a major validation for a number of years. They provide a general health check on all courses in that subject area and consider developments for the 5 years ahead. As we now have a curriculum management system (CourseLoop), and because of the recent restructure, we have refocused the emphasis on subject reviews so that they look back over the previous 5 years and then look forward to the next 5 years, taking on board discussions with external practitioners and academics. We hope that as a result, subject reviews will be viewed as a positive, useful exercise that will set a helpful agenda for development as well as disseminating good practice and highlighting industry needs.
Changes to the subject review process
The rebooted subject review process will differ to the system we developed during lockdown as follows:
- No compliance exercise – CourseLoop has removed this need and we can run reports to carry out checks on subject groupings.
- There will be a virtual student meeting approximately 2-3 weeks before the subject review is held which will feed into the questions set ahead of the subject review.
- The actual subject review meeting will be in-person, on campus over a morning with external practitioners and external academics attending to encourage robust, useful discussions. Questions will be set before the meeting and finalised in a short private panel meeting.
- The self evaluation document has been revised to emphasise course data and consider areas such as industry developments, external review of student assessments as well as helping course teams to consider alternative solutions for problematic elements within their subject grouping such as poorly performing courses.
- A clearer subject review sign off period to close off subject reviews on CourseLoop.
