Open call for Study of Slope

Open call: ‘non-musical’ singers for Study of Slope

hcmf// is looking for people based in Huddersfield (and the surrounding area) who self-identify as non-musical to take part in the performance of Composer in Residence Lina LapelytÄ—’s Study of Slope on Saturday 16 November 2024.

Study of Slope is a musical meditation on queerness, beauty, silencing, and acceptance, constructed on excerpts of Living in a Land, an essay by Sean Ashton which is a chronicle of a mind fighting its own oppositional nature. In this performance, voices once silenced by the Western musical traditions that exclude those who are considered to sing ‘off-key’ will be brought to the fore.

Known for her performance-based practice rooted in music, Lina’s work flirts with pop culture, gender stereotypes and nostalgia. Her works often engage trained and untrained performers in an act of singing, through a wide range of genres including mainstream music and opera.

If you’ve ever been told you ‘can’t sing’ but you’d enjoy being part of a choir of untrained voices, we’d love to hear from you.
