QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024

 

In the 2024 QS World University Rankings By Subject the University of Huddersfield has been named as one of the world's top universities in 13 subjects and in the top 300 for ten of those subjects.

 

The 2024 edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject, released on 10 April by global higher education analyst QS Quacquarelli Symonds, names the world’s best universities for the study of 55 academic disciplines (narrow subject areas) and 5 broad subject areas.

 

Compared to the previous year, the institution is ranked in four additional subjects with another three of the University’s programmes improving in rank.

The University’s best performance is in Music, in which it ranks 20th globally, and 6th in the UK. It’s important to note that Music is the newest QS discipline released for the first time in 2024 as a standalone subject.

The 13 subjects where the University of Huddersfield is named among the world’s top universities are: Music, Performing ArtsCommunication & Media Studies, Petroleum Engineering, EducationEnglish Language & LiteratureSociologyMechanical Engineering, Aeronautical & ManufacturingEngineering - Electrical & Electronic, Computer Science & Information Systems, Business & Management Studies, Nursing, and Architecture and the Built Environment.

Other highlights:

 

  • The three subjects being ranked for the first time are Architecture/ Built Environment,  Engineering – Electrical & Electronic and Nursing.
  • The University performed best in the broad area of Arts & Humanities, in which it is placed 288=, an increase of 45 places from last year’s 333= in the world.
  • Engineering - Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing has moved up the rankings from 351-400 to 251-300.
  • Computer Science & Information Systems has also moved up from 651-680 to 601-650.

The QS World University Rankings provide an independent comparative analysis on the performance of more than 16,400 individual university programmes, taken by students at more than 1500 universities in 96 locations around the world, across 55 academic disciplines and five broad faculty areas.

United Kingdom has 1569 programmes ranked across 103 institutions. Of these, 338 climb the table, and 109 rank for the first time. UK institutions top 16 subject tables and boast the world’s highest concentration of programmes in the world’s top three, with 4% placing in this tier.

Reputation indicators are based on the responses of more than 240,000 employers and academics to QS surveys while Citations per Paper and H-Index measure research impact and productivity. International Research Network (IRN) is used to assess cross-border research collaboration.
