University of Huddersfield’s success with QS in 2023

What is QS?

QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) is a rating system that provides a detailed look at higher education institutions, enabling potential students to identify the strengths of the universities present.

It is recognised internationally and is one of the key rankings systems used by international students when selecting a university.

2023 has seen positive success stories for the University of Huddersfield in the various QS rankings, achieving gains or successes in the QS Rankings by Subject, the QS World Rankings, the QS Star University Ratings and inclusion in the inaugural QS World Rankings: Europe 2024.

QS World Rankings

The University of Huddersfield’s reputation with employers and academics around the world has seen it make significant progress in the latest QS University Rankings.

In the last two years, the University has risen up the rankings of 1,500 global institutions surveyed by around 150 places and is now 567th in the 2024 QS World University Rankings.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Tim Thornton said, “These QS rankings reflect our burgeoning reputation and show how well we have recovered following the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.”

QS Stars

Ratings can provide students with an in-depth picture of the strengths and weaknesses of a university in specific areas (QS, QS Stars Home | Top Universities). Universities receive a rating of 0-5+ Stars.

In 2020, the University was awarded an excellent 5 Star Rating. We’re delighted to say this was re-awarded as 5 Star again in September 2023.

This international benchmarking system renders Five Star universities as world-class in areas such as Teaching, Employability, Facilities, Innovation, Internationalisation and Inclusiveness.

QS World University Rankings by Subject

QS uses five key metrics to compile the subject rankings. Reputation indicators are based on the responses of 150,000 academics and 99,000 employers to QS surveys while Citations per Paper and H-Index measure research impact and productivity.

In the 2023 QS World University Rankings by Subject, the University of Huddersfield has been named as one of the world's top universities in 11 subjects and in the top 300 for five of those subjects.

The University’s best performance is in Performing Arts, in which it ranks 27th globally and 9th in the United Kingdom. Compared to the previous year, the institution is ranked in four additional subjects with another four of the University’s programmes improving in rank.

The 11 subjects where the University of Huddersfield is named among the world’s top universities are: Performing Arts, Communication & Media Studies, Petroleum Engineering, Education, English Language & Literature, Sociology, Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical & Manufacturing, Business & Management Studies, Computer Science & Information Systems and the broad subject areas of Arts and Humanities and Social Sciences & Management.
