Lunar New Year celebrations at the University of Huddersfield

Spring Festival is a key date in the University events calendar and is a festival of celebration for the Lunar New Year.

The annual Spring Festival celebrations are a major highlight for students on campus, especially as we have many international students from China, Malaysia, South Korea, Vietnam, Hong Kong and Taiwan studying at the University.

This year, we celebrated Spring Festival in early February, with a Vietnamese Cultural Celebration, Chinese New Year Gala, a Spring Festival event and traditional Lion Dance in Student Central.

The Festival gave students from the UK and scores of other countries around the world a chance to gain fascinating insights into the differing cultures of South-East Asia and to share in the celebrations.

Alan Tobi, International Student Experience Manager, said: “We recognise how important these celebrations are and we take great pride in acknowledging the efforts and contributions of our students that made them such a great success. It was fantastic to see British, European, African, American and Middle Eastern students joining in, helping to develop their global mind-sets.”

Postgraduate Research Student and President of the University’s Chinese Student Society, Yue Yu, helped with organising the Chinese New Year Gala this year and said: “I've made a lot of friends with similar interests through attending and hosting these events, which have not only made my university life interesting, but also allowed me to learn a lot of new skills and improve myself. I really enjoy and appreciate the global campus events that the International Office supports!”
