University provided laptops

Colleagues should be aware that laptops must not be connected to the University’s wired network, the wall-based network sockets that can be found in campus-based offices.

Laptops that were provided to staff during lockdown in order to work from home were configured to give convenient access to many essential University systems such as Office 365 and Outlook email and calendar specifically from home but were never intended to be plugged in to the wired network within our campus buildings.

University laptops designed for home working are naturally more permissive to allow them to operate on the Internet in a range of locations, and do not have the normal campus security policies applied. They should therefore not be connected to the wired campus network, which is designed as a more highly trusted network, as doing so risks our cyber-security compliance.

University provided laptops can be connected to the University’s “Uni-WiFi” or “Eduroam” wireless networks which are available across campus and are separate from the wired network. WiFi allows access to Office 365 applications, Outlook email and calendar and many other systems.
