Cyber-attacks against universities are becoming increasingly common. Changes are being made to increase the security of the computer accounts used by university students - the account used to log in to the network and applications, such as Office 365. The information below has been issued to students but for those who provide support to or interact with students, it’s important you know about these changes too.

Password Policy Change
For all students, from Tuesday 8 June, the next time you change your password you will need to choose one that is at least 16-characters long, however you won’t be forced to change your password. We recommend making a ‘passphrase’ linking three random words that are easy for you to remember but hard for others to guess.
Multifactor Authentication (MFA)
MFA provides an extra layer of protection for your account using your mobile phone. You may already use MFA for other internet services such as online banking and personal email. You’ll be enrolled for MFA based on when you became a student at the University:
|
University Start Date |
MFA Enrolment Date |
|
September 2020 onwards |
You’re already enrolled! |
|
September 2019 or January 2020 |
Wednesday 9 June 2021 |
|
Any time before September 2019 |
Tuesday 20 July 2021 |
When you log in for the first time after your MFA enrolment date you will be presented with a request to register for MFA. An Enrolment Wizard will walk you through these steps. Once completed you’ll also have access to the self-service password reset (SSPR) system which allows you to change your password anytime you like and unlock your account via a web browser.
Remember if you suspect someone else knows your password you should change it as soon as possible so that you know your account is secure.
An information page has been created, which:
- Explains the reasons for the changes above in more detail.
- Has frequently asked questions (FAQs) relating to the change, MFA and choosing a passphrase.
- Describes what to do if you encounter issues and how to get help.
