Dr Philip Clegg

The University is delighted to announce that Dr Philip Clegg, Head of Enterprise & Entrepreneurship, has recently been elected Vice President of Enterprise Educators UK (EEUK).  Having joined EEUK in 2016, his election follows previous board positions of Company Secretary in 2017, and re-election for a second term in 2019 when he was also awarded the EEUK Fellowship.

The purpose of EEUK is to enable excellence in enterprise education, and it is known as the leading voice of enterprise and entrepreneurship education.  Philip’s position on the board gives Huddersfield a seat at the highest level of influence in the field of enterprise and entrepreneurship, and membership of the organisation enables the University and all its staff access to best practice and workshops in this field. There are a host of member benefits (including additional funding for research on enterprise and entrepreneurship and conference fee reductions), and input into the design and delivery of enterprise and entrepreneurship education, so that Huddersfield can help shape national and international policy.

Philip has worked in the Enterprise team since 2011.  The team work hard at supporting all students and recent graduates to be more enterprising and develop their skills in problem solving, innovation, and networking – all skills necessary for graduate employability – as well as helping students extend these skills to entrepreneurship and starting their own businesses.  As part of their work, the service is also offering the Innovation Creative Exchange Plus (ICE+) programme.  This initiative brings together students from all subjects and levels within diverse interdisciplinary teams, to find solutions to real world business problems set and faced by external  businesses and organisations.  The student teams compete to win a one-week paid placement to further develop their proposed solutions,  and gain valuable work experience.  Students feedback that in addition to the practical skills, they also enjoy making new friends, especially across subjects and – particularly for international students – learning how we work in a different cultural setting.

Philip’s honour with EEUK is in addition to his recent academic success.  He was recently awarded his Doctor of Enterprise for his research into social enterprise; businesses which aim to address social/environmental problems.  At the University, there are various pathways into research, and the Masters of Enterprise (MEnt) and Doctor of Enterprise (EntD) are postgraduate research degrees designed for students to undertake the research needed to underpin a new business, social enterprise, or innovative service idea.
