Kirklees Council has been working in partnership with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, developing a proposal to make improvements to key locations on certain southern corridor approaches to Huddersfield. Plans have been developed to improve four key locations: Lockwood Bar, Longroyd Lane, Folly Hall and A62 Queensgate.
The key locations are often severely congested at peak times which makes travel difficult, unreliable and slow. The locations also have limited facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.
The locations and their improvements are:
Lockwood Bar
- Reducing the amount of traffic flow through the community area of Lockwood
- Diverting some traffic flow between Bridge Street and Lockwood Road by an
- improved Albert Street
- Enhancements to Lockwood Road/Bridge Street/Albert Street
Longroyd Lane
- Creating a 2nd lane on Longroyd Lane towards A62 Manchester Road
- Cyclist and pedestrian shared use pavement 3m wide and cyclist advanced stop line at junction along with pedestrian facility across Longroyd Lane as part of the provision of new traffic signals at the junction
- Provision for potential access for redevelopment of the adjacent site
Folly Hall
- Extending the existing right turn lane from Folly Hall to Caine Road
- Extending the existing right turn lane from Caine Road to Folly Hall
A62 Queensgate
- New and improved crossing at Shorehead roundabout and Wakefield Road
- Reduced pedestrian crossing distances on Zetland Street and Queen Street
- with an improved junction area
- Wider cycle and pedestrian spaces on Queensgate
- Footway and highway resurfacing, landscaping and area enhancements
The improvements proposed at these four key locations aim to:
- Reduce congestion and journey times
- Improve air quality
- Enhance the public realm
- Reduce the potential for accidents
- Improve conditions for cyclists and pedestrians
- Improve bus reliability
- Enhance access to land for new housing and economic development
Public engagement on the proposals is open Monday 30 September to Friday 25 October 2019. Kirklees Council would welcome your feedback and comments.
