Research in Conversation event focuses on culture in Fire and Rescue Service

Research in Conversation returns with a live podcast recording hosted by the University of Huddersfield’s Dr Tom Simcock, featuring representatives from North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (NYFRS).
The latest in the lecture series delves into research conducted by Dr Simcock, of the University’s Department of Social and Psychological Sciences, and will look at Improving Culture in the Fire & Rescue Service through Social Sciences.
For his PhD, Dr Simcock investigated organisational change and reforms in a UK Fire and Rescue Service, and as part of this, evaluated the impact of the service’s prevention programme on behavioural change in the community.
NYFRS has been working in partnership with the University’s researchers to lead the charge on national learning, pioneering new frameworks for cultural transformation, wellbeing and workforce inclusion.
The live podcast event, which is part of the national Festival of Social Science, will dive deep into the everyday realities of station life, the banter, the bonds and the behaviours while exploring how these shape the experiences of those who serve.

Research in Conversation events are free and open to members of the public, students and staff. They are an opportunity for the University to share its research with the wider community and for people to hear directly from its experts.
The event takes place on Wednesday 29 October from 4pm to 5pm on Campus within the Oastler Building. Tickets are available through Eventbrite.
The Festival of Social Science is an annual celebration of research and knowledge, exploring the world of social science, from how society has shaped our local areas to behaviours that help fight climate change.
The festival is led and funded by the UKRI Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), which supports research and training in social science subjects. Events are taking place across the UK, delivered by more than 40 universities.
It runs from Saturday 18 October to Saturday 8 November 2025. Find out more about the University of Huddersfield’s involvement here.
