The University of Huddersfield has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding with Vrije Universiteit (VU) Amsterdam, strengthening international collaboration in research and doctoral training across policing, security, and serious and organised crime (SOC).

The MoU was signed during the National SOC Local Conference by Professor Monty Adkins, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Knowledge Exchange, Professor John Synnott, Director of the University’s Professional Doctoral Academy, and Dr Jasper van der Kemp from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, marking a shared commitment to collaborative research and the co-supervision of doctoral candidates.

This formal agreement will focus on joint research initiatives and the co-supervision of doctoral candidates drawn from policing and law enforcement agencies in both the UK and internationally.

Speaking at the signing, Professor Adkins said, "This MoU with Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam reinforces our commitment to research partnerships that bring together cutting-edge academic thinking and real-world policing challenges. Together, we aim to drive innovation and impact in one of the most critical areas of public service."

Professor John Synnott added, "Dr van der Kemp's insights into European SOC dynamics during our Round Table were invaluable. This collaboration marks a step forward in embedding international academic expertise into our doctoral programmes, ensuring relevance, quality, and global reach."

Dr van der Kemp, a leading academic in investigative criminology and policing, also played a key role in the SOC Round Table event Chaired by Chief Constable Steve Jupp and Prof Synnott by offering a European perspective on transnational crime trends.

The MoU supports the ambitions of the Professional Doctoral Academy, which by the end of 2025 will host over 35 doctoral candidates from 10 national and international law enforcement and security organisations. This makes it the largest doctoral programme of its kind globally dedicated to police and national security-focused research. The academy recently played a central role at the World Police Summit which provided a value opportunity to showcase our research to an international audience.
