Cultures of Climate virtual exhibition showcases responses to climate issues

Students and staff within the School of Arts and Humanities at the University of Huddersfield are showcasing work responding to climate topics in a Virtual Exhibition, Cultures of Climate: Embedding Cultures of Climate into the Curriculum as part of the School’s Cultures of Climate programme.

Cultures of Climate, hosted by the Centre for Cultural Ecologies in Art, Design and Architecture (CEADA), is a place-based research festival showcasing responses to climate through exhibitions, installations, performances, workshops, podcasts, talks, and discussions about the climate crisis through art and creative activities.

Cultures of Climate: Embedding Cultures of Climate into the Curriculum is a virtual exhibition of staff and undergraduate student work from the School of Arts and Humanities at the University of Huddersfield. It forms part of the led by the which explores climate change through place-based research and creative practice as a cultural, material, and educational issue.

The exhibition features interdisciplinary responses to climate topics from seven subject areas: Contemporary Art & Illustration, Fashion Design, English Literature and History, Architecture, Graphic Design, and Photography – engaging with climate through subject-specific methods that contribute to broader discussions about curriculum development in the arts and humanities.

Contributions include:

  • Contemporary Art & Illustration (supervised by Dr Lydia Czolacz): Studio-based work examining the role of visual art in public and cultural climate discourse.
  • Fashion Design (supervised by Dr Claire Evans, Debbie Allsop, Kathryn Brennand; technical support: Nicola Gearing): Sustainable fashion practices, including zero-waste pattern cutting and design.
  • English Literature and History (supervised by Dr Iona Murphy and Joe Hopkinson): Creative and critical responses using eco-theory, visual media, and research into historical responses to environmental disruption.
  • Architecture (supervised by Dr Danilo Di Mascio, Dr Ahmed Hassan, Jordan Halliday): Speculative proposals for a ‘Museum of Climate’ exploring architecture’s role in response to the climate breakdown.
  • Graphic Design (supervised by Dr Stephen Hibbert): Visual communication work in response to briefs on sustainable packaging, branding, and public messaging.
  • Photography (supervised by Dr Laura Mateescu and Dr David Eckersley): Practice-based projects exploring everyday climate impacts through lens-based media.

The curatorial overview and virtual exhibition environment were produced by Dr Laura Mateescu and Dr Danilo Di Mascio.

The exhibition runs alongside the physical Graduate Showcase in the Barbara Hepworth Building open daily from 10am to 4pm until Friday 20 June.
