Princess Royal receives Honorary Doctorate from University of Huddersfield

Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal has been conferred with an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Huddersfield for her services to the arts.

The Princess Royal was presented with her doctorate in front of over 100 graduating students and their families during the University’s graduation week in the University’s Oastler Building.

Giving the oration, the University’s Director of Research, Innovation and Knowledge Exchange Professor Parik Goswami said, “I personally witnessed Her Royal Highness’s heartfelt and considered speeches on some of the challenges and opportunities the industry faces at the UK Fashion and Textile Association’s Sustainability in Textiles events in the last two years. Most importantly, The Princess Royal also attended and addressed the Textile Institute’s annual conference in 2023 hosted by the University of Huddersfield.

“Her Royal Highness has an extraordinary passion for the fashion and textile sector and demonstrates a genuine interest in the intricate craftsmanship, technical skills and creativity that define the industry.

“Her frequent visits are not only a testament to her commitment but also serve as a significant morale booster for those involved in the industry. The Princess Royal’s presence and encouragement have created a positive ripple effect, enhancing the visibility and prestige of UK fashion and textiles on a global stage.”

Whilst on campus, Her Royal Highness also visited Heritage Quay, the University’s archive facility and exhibition space. She viewed the current display, ‘The town that taught itself’, which commemorates 200 years of technical and professional education in Huddersfield, and as well as work by students Charlotte Holland, Ellie Raine, Liza Smeeton, Mandy Shepherd and Talia Bechelet from the BA Textiles and BA Costumes with Textiles’ end of year showcases.
