School of Human and Health Sciences awarded Athena Swan Bronze

The School of Human and Health Sciences is delighted to have been awarded the Athena Swan Bronze Award for gender equality, in recognition of its commitment to progressing equality within the School.
The award recognises the School’s commitment to Advance HE’s Athena Swan charter, which sets out principles for transforming gender equality within Higher Education Institutions.
Professor Georgina Blakeley, Acting Dean of the School of Human and Health Sciences, said: "The Athena Swan Bronze Award is testament to the commitment of all staff and students to gender equality and I am very proud that our School has received this accolade. This Award, however, is just the start and I am looking forward to ensuring that we continue our work towards advancing intersectional gender equality."

The School established a Self-Assessment Team (SAT), comprised of academics, professional and support services staff along with undergraduate and postgraduate students. Working groups were also established to progress work in areas that needed focused input.
The School’s Director for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, Dr Berenice Golding, took the lead on preparing the application, with Data Analyst Jing Li co-ordinating the analysis of the extensive datasets used to develop the application.
The application evaluates the School’s current investment in advancing gender equality, with an intersectional lens where possible, to develop a comprehensive Action Plan.
The Action Plan focuses on student/learner recruitment and attainment, career progression and appraisal for academic and PTO staff, enhancing gender equality and EDI work in the School, and School culture and staffing. It is an ambitious plan that illustrates the School’s commitment to advancing intersectional gender equality in all areas of its work.
The School’s success follows, most recently, the attainment of the Athena Swan Bronze Award by the School of Computing and Engineering and the renewal of the Athena Swan Silver Award for the School of Applied Sciences.
